Movie Reviews Roundup

This week has been super productive for only one reason.  I managed to view all the big summer blockbusters that I missed in theaters the first time around.  With the rising cost of movie tickets and the fact that these movies sometimes have a short run in theaters, it's better to catch them at your own convenience in your "home theater".  So in short span of four days, here are my quick reviews of the summer movie fare.

X-Men: First Class - I love the stories from the X-Men universe especially the ones that feature Professor Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and Magneto (Michael Fassbender).  This current installment directed by Matthew Vaughn tells us how the two met and later went on their separate paths.  Hank McCoy (Nicholas Hoult) aka Beast and Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) aka Mystique also show up as  youngsters along with other mutants like Banshee and Havok.  The big bad in this film is Sebastian Shaw (Kevin Bacon) who singlehandedly wants to start World War III by inciting USA and Russia into war.   The moments of the film that focused on Prof. Xavier and Magneto are the whole film because the actors who play them are riveting.  I wish it could have been more on their complicated relationship while the sequences featuring the younger mutants felt a bit amateurish.

Rating:
Captain America: The First Avenger - Decent film about an earnest hero who gets a second chance at being a part of the war effort.  The movie is an origin story how Steve Rodgers (Chris Evans) becomes Captain America along with his fight against Hitler and the Nazis but mostly with rogue ex-Nazi, Red Skull (Hugo Weaving).  Along with a good supporting cast of actors as Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell), Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper), Bucky (Sebastian Stan), Colonel Phillips (Tommy Lee Jones) and Dr. Erskine (Stanley Tucci), it is this summer's second introduction to next summer's big Avengers film.  It is a hardly outstanding but I think that has to do with the subject matter.  It was missing that extra spark of excitement.  But eventually serves to introduce us further into the world and universe of Avengers.

Rating:
The Hangover Part II - The inevitable followup to Hangover which was the surprise breakout hit of summer 2009.  Here's the thing, Hangover was genuinely funny with outrageous yet hilarious situations.  This sequel tries to replicate that same magic again as the gang (Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis, Ken Leong and Justin Bartha) all heads to Thailand for Stu's wedding.  This time round, the characters face more outrageous scenarios to gain laughs.  And those were too few in coming.  I think this film was trying too hard, I much prefer the first film.  You could almost guess what was coming next in the film, it became that predictable.  I'm glad I didn't see this in the theaters, I'd have been disappointed to spend money on this.

Rating:

Thor - I've never been a fan of the character Thor but I admit I was intrigued by Kenneth Branagh directing this comic book film.  The result was highly enjoyable.  I had no clue about the character so the film did well to introduce me to its universe and the characters.  Anthony Hopkins as King Odin was well cast and I was quite impressed with Chris Hemsworth as Thor and Tom Hiddleston as Loki; their sibling rivalry looks to spill over to next Avengers film.  Natalie Portman doesn't have much to do except smile here.  I also didn't quite recognize Idris Elba as Heimdall, the mask he wears totally obscures his face.  Like the other films, this one too sets itself up for future sequels.  I'd be interested to see where the story goes.

Rating:

Rise of the Planet of the Apes - I saved the best for last.  I'm regretting missing this film in the theaters as it would have been amazing to view.  A scientist, Will Rodman (James Franco), testing a drug as cure for Alzheimer's for his father (John Lithgow), brings home a baby chimpanzee born in the lab.  As the chimp Caesar grows, so does his intelligence as he has genetically gotten the ALZ-112 drug in his DNA.  But Caesar begins to wonder about his place in society, he yearns to be free and be normal.  After an attack on a neighbor puts Caesar in an animal facility, he gets firsthand an experience of how other simians are treated.  He then assumes his role as the leader of the apes.  This is a well enacted film in all aspects; there is never a single dull moment.  The VFX is astonishing mostly because Andy Serkis' motion capture performance of Caesar.  The animation of all the other apes is well done too, the emotion seen in the eyes is especially chilling.  I enjoyed this movie immensely and wouldn't mind seeing it again.

Trailer Time: Arthur, Bridesmaids, Something Borrowed, Hop and The Hangover Part II

First look at the trailer for the 1981 remake of Dudley Moore's Arthur. This time around the man-child heir to a billion dollar empire is played by comedian Russell Brand. Also with him in the film are Helen Mirren as his nanny/caretaker, Jennifer Garner as the heiress he's supposed to marry and Greta Gerwig as the woman he falls in love with. The trailer was quite amusing and I hope this movie does not disappoint. It has the starcast to succeed.

From producer Judd Apatow and director Paul Feig comes Bridesmaids a complete comedy aimed at women. Did I hear that right? The guys behind Knocked Up, Superbad, Pineapple Express and Forgetting Sarah Marshall are actually making women the focus of the film. Written and starring Kirsten Wiig (SNL), the film is about the members of bridal party who get together for the bride's (Maya Rudolph) wedding. This has great comic pedigree, I'm really looking forward to this.

Based on the book by Emily Giffin, Something Borrowed takes a look at the friendship of best friends Darcy (Kate Hudson) and Rachel (Ginnifer Goodwin). As evident from the trailer, what happens when the good friend starts to have feelings for her best friend's fiance? Typical rom-com which Hudson is known for. Colin Egglesfield and John Krasinski are also part of the cast.

Another Russell Brand feature except this time, he's the Easter Bunny. No, really! From the studio that brought Despicable Me, Hop shows how E.B (short for the Easter Bunny) doesn't really want to fulfill his destiny but instead just wants to play the drums. While trying to make it in Hollywood, he runs into Fred (James Marsden) and Samantha (Kaley Cuoco). This looks great, very funny. E.B is adorable.

And finally, the movie sequel we all have been waiting for, The Hangover Part II. They were outrageous the first time around. What will they do next? The whole gang is back but this time the action has moved to Bangkok, Thailand. We now know there's a monkey involved somehow and Ed Helms get a face tattoo. I can't wait to see this film.

What the hell is Hangover 2 all about?

Oh. My. God!  Todd Phillips, director of The Hangover Part II, debuted a strange new photo on Facebook and the Interwebs has gone crazy trying to figure out: What does this mean?  What happened to Zach's hair? Ed Helms has a face tattoo? And let's talk about the monkey in the room! It's wearing a Rolling Stone jacket.  This movie is not going to disappoint.  Hilarious!

Casting Updates: Spiderman, Hangover 2 and Brad Pitt's next role

  • Abigail Breslin will be celebrating New Year's Eve, the next film after Valentine's Day for director Gary Marshall.  Joining her with be Lea Michele from Glee.
  • Jamie Chung (Sucker Punch) joins the Hangover 2 party as Ed Helms' fiancee.  Now we know why Heather Graham isn't coming back.
  • Brad Pitt's next film could be a comedy, Cogan's Trade, with director Andrew Dominick who he's worked with before on Jesse James.  It's been a long time since he's done a comedy and it'll be a welcome change.
  • Tom Hardy is quite possibly up for every role in Hollywood these days.  You could see him in Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter in a supporting role.   Wanted's Timur Bekmambetov will be directing the movie.
  • Scarlett Johansson next two roles are vastly different, that's a good thing.  She's in final talks to play Matt Damon's wife in Cameron Crowe's We Bought a Zoo and will also play an alien who preys on humans in Jonathan Glazer's Under the Skin.  Guess which film has the fanboys salivating already?
  • And finally, big news for the Spiderman prequel which has yet to name itself.  Please do it soon.  I hate typing Spiderman prequel all the time!!!  So, the casting reads so, Martin Sheen is Uncle Ben and Sally Fields is in talks to play Aunt May.  And as for Mary Jane, there will be no Mary Jane in the prequel.  No love triangle this time, folks.

News Update: The Hobbit, Green Lantern and Hangover 2

Monday, October 4, 2010

Monday's Mentions

  • It's the mother of all casting news!!! No, they haven't announced who's going to play the mother on How I Met Your Mother.  But Meryl Streep will play Julia Roberts' mother in August: Osage County, a dark comedy based on a Broadway play.  John Wells will be directing and Harvey Weinstein will be producing.  This will be definitely worth watching.
  • Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Zach G (that's what we'll call him as I can't keep typing his long last name all the time!) are back!!  And this time they're hitting up Bangkok on their Hangover 2.   That's what Todd Phillips has to say about the sequel on Empire Online.  He promises more tigers and more mayhem.   Oh, boy, there's so much trouble for the guys to get into in Bangkok.  I can't wait.
  • One of my favorite actresses, Amy Adams, has decisions, decisions to make.  She's considering three different roles.  She could be starring in the Muppets Movie opposite Jason Segel.  Or opposite Matt Damon in Cameron Crowe's We Bought a Zoo.  The story is about a man who, well, buys a zoo.  The title is literal.  Finally she may be thinking about joining Chris Pine in Welcome to People, being directed by Alex Kurtzman about a man whose father dies of cancer and learns that he kept a secret family.  Adams would play the part of the half-sister.
  • More Olivia Wilde casting news.  She'll play Justin Timberlake's mother in Andrew Niccols next project.  No, really.  The story takes place in a society where one stops aging at 25.  That should explain everything, right?  No, not really.  Well, along with Olivia and Justin, Amanda Seyfriend and Cillian Murphy are also part of the cast as a rich heiress and a corrupt lawman, respectively.  Maybe this was the mother of all casting news, no?
  • The Social Network wins the weekend box-office and so begin the start of the Facebook puns.  Just you wait, this is will last all the way until Oscar weekend.  Brace yourself.
