Around the World in Posters: The Great Gatsby, Elysium, Lone Ranger, Violet & Daisy and more!

There are some great new posters out this week giving us a look ahead to a summer of sci-fi, action and lots of end-of-the world action.  Have a look below.

Kudos to the production design team for The Great Gatsby because the sets look absolutely stunning. I am loving these Art Deco posters.

First poster for Neill Blomkamp's follow-up to District 9, Elysium starring everyman Matt Damon,  Sharlto Copley and Jodie Foster

These guys have clearly not learned their lesson and are back for more mayhem in The Hangover Part III.

Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer team up for Disney's The Lone Ranger.

Roman Holiday is back in theatres with a lovely postcard feel of old Rome.  I want a Vespa too!

Benedict Cumberbatch is on the warpath in yet another Star Trek In Darkness poster.

Our first glimpse of Brad Pitt in World War Z.

The funniest guys in the room all get together to make an end of the world film.  This is the End hits theatres this June.

First poster for Violet & Daisy starring Alexis Bledel and Saoirse Ronan.

The Great Gatsby Trailer

The first trailer for The Great Gatsby hit the web today and it certainly is interesting. I have a strange feeling about this film, in that, I'm either going to love it or hate it. Every scene in the trailer seems to scream 'Look at me, I'm being made in 3D!' to me and I hope it doesn't get too distracting from the actual content of the film. I was really looking forward to seeing Leonardo DiCaprio reunite with his Romeo + Juliet director Baz Luhrmann until they announced the film was being made in 3D. If it is used as well as it was in Hugo, then Luhrmann would be vindicated for shooting in 3D but until I see it, I've got a bad feeling about the 3D.

The film stars Leo as Jay Gatsby and Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan in the movie adaptation of the great American novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Also starring in the movie are Tobey Maguire, Isla Fisher, Joel Edgerton along with a special appearance by Indian legend Amitabh Bachchan in his Hollywood debut. The film will release this Christmas in the US.

This Week's Casting Update

(Pic: MTV Movie Blog)

  • Tom Hardy is unveiled as Bane in The Dark Knight Rises website.  Suddenly, I'm worried for Christian Bale...and his back!
  • Armie Hammer, having great success post The Social Network, joins yet another movie.  This time he will be The Lone Ranger opposite Johnny Depp's Tonto.  Sensing the beginnings of a good career!
  • Somehow I can't imagine Michelle Williams as Glinda the Good Witch in the Oz: The Great and Powerful.  She joins James Franco who'll be Oz and Mila Kunis and Rachel Weisz as the evil witches of the West and East.  I've always pegged her as a dramatic, serious actress.  Even in Dawson's Creek, her character was extremely emo.
  • Joel Edgerton (Kinky Boots) is Tom Buchanan in Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby replacing Ben Affleck who dropped out to do another film.  Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan are already part of the cast as Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan.  I'm eager to see Luhrmann's next but his decision to film in it in 3D is giving me major doubts.
  • The other Snow White film (which is how I refer to it), Snow White and the Huntsman, has found its Huntsman.  It's Thor himself, Chris Hemsworth.  The evil Queen in this version will be played by Charlize Theron and Prince Charming will be Sam Claflin (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides).  The movie has also moved up its release date to release before Tarsem Singh's Snow White film.  Ah, rivalry!

Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan!

Baz Luhrmann has chosen his Daisy.  It's Carey Mulligan and the picture above is from the screen test with Leo DiCaprio.  How very cool!  Mulligan has shown herself to be a fine and capable actress and I have no doubt she'll fit the role.  There's a sweet story about how when she first heard she was cast, she burst into tears. Aww!

Of course, this means I have to read the book, The Great Gatsby now.  I can't recall if I ever managed to read it in school.  How embarrassing! I shall have to rectify that mistake.  Has anyone else read the book?
